While working an internship for Manuka Sports Event Management I was asked to develop a knot tying guide for Atlantic Cup Boat Race. Manuka organizes and manages sport events and one of their most common clients is the Atlantic Cup Boat Race which begins in Virginia and ends in Newport, Rhode Island. There is a gathering to celebrate the completion of the race and viewers bring their children with them. However to keep the children entertained there is a knot tying lesson to show kids how to make shipping knots.
In order to show the kids the proper way to make the knots I was asked to create a handout showing the parts of the knots to move and in which direction. To try and make it easier for the children I first designed the rope and then colored the moving part of rope in red to indicate it is being used. Using the red on the rope as well as the arrows to show a new movement in the knot process I was able to create a process to follow. In order to make it more child friendly I included the Atlantic Cup’s children’s mascot Captain Dave to create a more friendly and upbeat tone to be more appealing for children. I also included the events sponsor logos to build awareness for the brand.
